To fix a sticking sliding door, vacuum and scrub the bottom track clean, spray the track and rollers with a silicone-based lubricant (never WD-40), then adjust the roller height screws at the bottom corners of the door a quarter turn at a time until it glides smoothly. Most doors are fixed in under 30 minutes with tools you already own.
Why Your Sliding Door Is Sticking
A sliding glass or patio door rides on small wheels called rollers, which sit inside a metal channel called the track. When a door becomes hard to move, hard to open, or hard to close, one of four things is almost always responsible:
- A dirty track. Dirt, sand, pet hair and grit pack into the channel and block the rollers. This is by far the most common cause, and the easiest to fix.
- No lubrication. Dry metal-on-metal contact creates drag, and often a grinding or squeaking sound as the door passes.
- Rollers set at the wrong height. The door sits too low and drags on the track, or too high and rocks in the frame.
- Worn or broken rollers. Flat spots, rusted bearings or cracked wheels that no longer roll at all — at which point the door is being dragged, not rolled.
Work through the fixes below in order. Cleaning and lubricating solves the majority of sticking doors on its own, and costs almost nothing. If those two steps don't do it, the roller adjustment usually will — and if that doesn't do it, you've narrowed the problem down to hardware, which is worth knowing before you spend money on it.

Clean The Track
Never lubricate a dirty track. Spraying over packed grit turns it into an abrasive paste, and the door will get worse rather than better.
- Vacuum out the loose debris. Run a crevice attachment down the full length of the bottom track to pull out dirt, dust, sand and pet hair. Don't skip the ends — that's where debris collects most.
- Scrub the sticky grime. Dip an old toothbrush in warm soapy water and work the corners and the raised ridge the rollers ride on. For hardened buildup, let the soapy water sit a few minutes to soften it first.
- Clean the upper channel too. The top track guides the door and collects dust that drops straight onto the rollers below.
- Dry it completely. Wipe the track down with a clean paper towel. Any moisture left behind traps the lubricant you're about to apply and pulls in fresh dirt.
Slide the door a few times before moving on. On a door that hasn't been cleaned in years, this step alone often restores most of the movement.
Lubricate The Track And Rollers
- Use a silicone-based lubricant spray. Apply a light, even coat along the bottom track and directly onto the rollers wherever you can reach them. Silicone is water-resistant, won't attract dirt, and lasts far longer on tracks and rollers than a general-purpose spray.
- Skip heavy grease and thick oils. Petroleum grease is fine on a hinge but wrong for an open track — it holds onto every speck of dust and sand that blows through the door.
- Work it in. Slide the door back and forth ten or fifteen times to spread the lubricant along the full length of the track and into the roller bearings.
- Wipe up the overspray. Blot any excess off the floor and threshold so it doesn't become a slip hazard.
This is the single most common mistake we see on service calls. WD-40's original formula is a solvent and water-displacing degreaser — not a long-term lubricant. It works for a day or two, then evaporates and leaves behind a residue that grabs dust and grit. Within a few weeks the track feels gummy and sticky again, often worse than before you started.

Adjust The Roller Height
If the door still drags after cleaning and lubricating, the rollers are sitting at the wrong height. Adjusting them is a five-minute job.
- Find the adjustment holes. Look at the bottom corners of the sliding panel, on the edge of the door. You'll see one or two small holes, sometimes hidden behind a plastic cap or a strip of trim you can pop off with a flathead screwdriver.
- Seat the screwdriver. Insert it into the hole until it engages the adjustment screw underneath.
- Turn in small increments. Make a quarter turn, then test the door. Then another quarter turn. Small adjustments add up fast, and overshooting is easy.
- Check which direction raises the door. Screw direction varies by manufacturer — on many doors clockwise raises the panel and extends the roller downward, but plenty of brands are reversed. Rather than guessing, make one quarter turn and watch what the gap at the bottom of the door does.
- Adjust both corners evenly. Raise one side much more than the other and the door will sit crooked and bind against the jamb.
The door glides with one hand, the gap along the top of the door is even from end to end, and the lock lines up cleanly with its catch in the frame.

Damaged rollers
Raise the door to its highest setting and look underneath with a flashlight. Wheels that are cracked, flat-spotted, rusted, or that won't spin freely by hand need replacing — no amount of lubricant fixes a seized bearing.
A bent or worn track
Run a finger along the raised rail. A dent or flattened section catches the rollers every pass. Minor bends can sometimes be tapped back straight; badly worn tracks need a track cap or replacement.
A frame out of square
House settling can pull a door frame out of square, so the door binds at the top or at the latch side. If the gap is visibly wider at one end and roller adjustment won't fix it, that's a job for a specialist.
A seized adjustment screw
If the height screw has rusted solid and won't turn, the door can no longer be re-levelled at all. That roller has reached the end of its life and needs to come out.
Why Rollers Fail — And What We Replace Them With
When a sliding door keeps going stiff no matter how often you clean it, the rollers are usually the reason. Failure comes down to corrosion or contamination. The bottom of a door track collects condensation, rainwater and grit. Moisture rusts a plain steel bearing from the inside, where it can't be cleaned or greased, and the rust flakes grind the races rough until the bearing comes apart. Nylon wheels fail a different way — they expand and contract with every hot afternoon and cold night until the material splits, usually starting at the hub.

Both have carried the same weight, in the same wet track, for the same number of years — so if one has failed the other is close behind.
